Documents & Organization
Access to your recent documents or create new documents from scratch or a template make the Doc Browser the perfect starting point.
OmniOutliner 5’s new Resource Browser makes finding your expense report or daily diary fast—just start typing.
Add your preferred sync folder to OmniOutliner’s Resource Browser. All your templates and outlines are automatically indexed and added.
OmniOutliner for iOS now keeps all of your Open in Place files ready to access again, right from the Doc Browser.
Sync your outlines using iCloud Drive, use third-party services such as Box, or host your own content via Git or WebDAV with apps such as Working Copy. If you’re already syncing using OmniPresence, you can continue to use that as well.
Interface
OmniOutliner plays along perfectly with other apps on both macOS and iOS. Full Screen, Slide Over, and Split View—they all get along well here. (On macOS, Slide Over and Split View aren’t relevant.)
Each row in OmniOutliner is accompanied by a note (if you’d like): an extra space for as little or as much information you need.
Made possible by iOS 11. Drag text and images into your Pro outlines simply and quickly.
Zoom in or out of your current document for better readability without actually changing the document’s custom styling. All the way from "Way too tiny" to "Over-the-top large".
If your iPad (or iPhone) is paired with a hardware keyboard, you’ll have access to common styling and organizational shortcuts. Just hold the Command key down to activate the shortcut guide.
Stay on top of word count with Document Stats, shown at the bottom or your window. The number of rows, words, and characters are included.
Not just search—filter your outline to show only that rows that contain a word or words you need to see.
Readability & Simplicity
OmniOutliner Essentials has a set of nine beautiful themes, uniform on both platforms, that don’t require any tweaking.
Depending on the background color of your document, OmniOutliner makes it easy on the eyes by automatically switching to the right color mode: Dark or Light.
A wonderful way to work with a lot more Focus. Move everything out of the way to see only your words. Inspectors slide in only when you need them.
Keep the row you’re currently editing centered in the middle of your screen. A great way to stay in the zone, and a lot easier on the neck.
Getting Data In & Out
OmniOutliner can import quite a few different file formats: OPML, plain text and tab-delimited plain text files (TXT), rich text files (RTF), and rich text format directory files (RTFD). OmniOutliner can also import previous OmniOutliner formats.
OmniOutliner can export to many more file formats: comma separated values (CSV), HTML and Dynamic HTML, Word®, OPML, plain text, PowerPoint® 2012, and RTF.
Use the native Share Sheet on both macOS and iOS to share your outlines with others via apps, messaging, and more.
Edit and save OPML documents without needing to take the extra step of re-exporting. OPML Mode sticks to the standards in the OPML format!
Pro
Outline Features
Set up custom numbering styles that follows typical conventions like Decimal or Alphanumeric, or mix them all up to your personal preference.
In addition to Inline Notes, in OmniOutliner Pro you can also display each rows’ notes in a separate, fixed area at the bottom of your window.
Some outlines call for more than just rows and plain text. Bold, italicize, and underline your text via a text popover or keyboard.
Search your outlines for strings of text, then click through the results in your Sidebar.
Set up Saved Filters to reference your document in useful ways—better than typical Searches, and they appear in your Sidebar. For example, set up Saved Filters for each character in a script to quickly see dialogue.
Record audio directly inside OmniOutliner. Save all your typing for later, or make sure you have a backup—just in case.
Attach PDFs, images, audio, video clips, or whatever reference material you need to include in your outlines. Images are displayed inline.
Copy a row in your Outliner document as a link, and then paste it anywhere it might be handy. The link will put your right back in the same spot in your document.
Use the Sidebar to select multiple rows to view in the main outline.
Create multiple columns for you data, and size them and arrange however you’d like.
Take advantage of multiple columns with a plethora of different smart types. Columns can be used to summarize data—like summing up your monthly budget numbers—or a different type completely, like a multiple choice box.
Keep lengthy rows short and simple with Text Folding. When you’re not editing a row, the text is automatically collapsed down to a single row.
Styling
OmniOutliner documents can have styles applied automatically applied based on its row level.
OmniOutliner also supports a whole host of Named Styles—styles specifically set up to apply as needed. Some templates will include Named Styles, and you can define as many as you want. The first 9 will be accessible via Function key shortcuts.
Save templates for outlines you’ll be creating over and over and over again. Templates save time, allow you to work with the same set of Names Styles and Level* Rows, and are a great way to set up reusable custom columns.
Every time you make a change to a row or Named Style, your Style Preview area of the Style Inspector updates.
Show and hide columns whenever handy. Need to export a document without facts and figures? Hide the column.
Scriptability & Automation
Cross-platform scripting for both iOS and macOS with JavaScript. Write automation once and run it everywhere. Create Plug-Ins, scripts, and get more done, faster.
Access the entirety of OmniOutliner’s interface with the classic Apple scripting language for macOS.
And Yet Even More
You can print everything you write in OmniOutliner. You can customize your document’s headers and footers with variable tokens. Change your printing margins, too.
MacOS lets you modify app-specific shortcuts, but OmniOutliner Pro makes it really easy by adding that capability right into the app.
Save your outlines as Excel® files, too. (RTFD is also available on Mac.)
